How We Work

Following an on-site test, a comprehensive report is produced and copies are distributed to all relevant personnel within 48 hours. The results form a scientific measure of floor safety.

Our report includes all slip resistance results for the areas tested. Floor areas that show cause for concern - that are found to be hazardous, or that become hazardous when contaminated - are clearly highlighted.

Wet Pendulum Testing

The Wessex Pendulum skid resistance tester uses a rubber slider that makes contact with the test surface over a prescribed distance. It measures the resistance to the motion of the pendulum created by that contact over a distance of 126 mm.

The rubber slider is first conditioned with P400 wet-and-dry sandpaper, then with a sheet of M 261X Lapping Film Grade 3MIC - ensuring consistent, repeatable results.

How wet pendulum testing works

The slip resistance value is a rigorous, repeatable average - not a single reading.

Testing to evaluate the frictional characteristics of the surface is carried out on a horizontal surface where possible. If this is not practicable, the direction of swing is preferably across the slope rather than up and down it. When testing textured or high-profile surfaces, the test program reflects both the predominant direction of pedestrian traffic and the direction of lowest slip resistance.

The slip resistance value (SRV) is the mean British Pendulum Number (BPN) as tested. It is calculated over five averaged tests, with the area tested in five different locations (L1โ€“L5).

For preparation, the test area is swept clean of debris then cleaned with a soft brush and an appropriate cleaning agent, depending on the contamination to be removed. The location is sprayed with water and a minimum of five test swings are performed, re-wetting the area before each swing. Swing values are recorded until the last three differ by no more than three units of the scale. The average of these three values is rounded to the nearest whole number and recorded as the SRV for that location. The location SRVs are then averaged to give the test area its Mean SRV.
